tatemae // 建前 (japanese, n.) - what a person pretends to believe; the behavior and opinions one must display to satisfy society’s demandsv.

Soulmates are not real; they are only figments of dreams, and the problem with dreams come true is that you always wake up or the dream becomes a nightmare. 

Love is never pure; and if it ever is, it's only pure for a second or two before devolving into a selfish craving— a desire to own and strip and steal and devour. 

Nothing lasts forever; connections with others— especially the heart-fluttering kind, the hand-holding kind, the lip-locking kind, the living by the light of the moon kind— are only temporary. 

Taemin never wants to believe that. He never would have considered any of those statements had they not been drawn by the hand he holds in dreams. Although he knows that she is wiser and more articulate than he could ever be, he can't quite resign himself to her beliefs, probably because he knows they were formed in the darkness of fear or under public scrutiny. 

"You're wrong," he wants to tell her every time he sees her, especially when they find each other in the rose garden under the moon's careful watch. "Soulmates are real, and you are mine. Love is pure when it is true, and I truly love you. Some things last forever— like my love for you, like my willingness to find you, like my willingness to wait for you." 

And he does tell her all of this and more over time. He does not tell her all at once, mostly because he struggles to find his voice on that night in the garden. By her tears, his tongue is tied, and his heart is topped, and his breath is stolen, and all he knows—

All he knows is that he cannot restrain himself for another moment. 

Taemin pulls her close and holds her head against his chest, where she can feel the steady beat of his heart that beats for her. He waits patiently until the sobs finish racking through her body. 

And as terrible as this is— watching her release every pain through tears— he knows that this moment marks a necessary chapter in their story. This moment turns a page. As terrible as this is, it isn't nearly as painful as the moment she lifts her head and slinks to her side of the bench. 

There it is again: the distance between what could be, what should be, what is destined to be, and what is. There it is again: the quietly screaming fear that maybe, this time, life will not abide by the book she wrote. There it is again: the desperate urge to beg in a whisper the wind would probably carry far away, "Come back. Lean on me. Let's rush the hands of time. Let's close our eyes and wake up in the part of our story where we have surrendered to who we were born to be to each other instead of who strangers see when they see our picture. Please." 

Of course, Taemin says no such thing. The urgency of his pleas pales to his calling to remind her of who she is— one of the brightest people in the world— in case nobody else has ever held up a mirror for her. 

It is never hard to say what she needs to hear, what she deserves to hear. If ever he feels heavy with the weight of all he cannot yet say, he reminds himself that the burden is not his alone. One day, she will wake up and feel it too— the weight of all that could have and should have been sooner, if she could just let go of those beliefs formed in the darkness of fear. 

And his role, Taemin believes, is to make the weight manageable by releasing them through his words, one by one: his beliefs formed in the light of their days spent together in the pages of her book.

He laughs and goes back on his phone. "I don't know. Google it," he says. You sigh and mutter, "Thanks for the help," then proceeded to grab your phone to google, 'how to bake a cake.'

TAEMIN - HYPNOS

The greek word hypnos symbolises the god of sleep. He can control their dreams and even hypnotize someone to fall asleep. Thanatos and Hypnos are twins.

TAEYONG - HADES

God of the Dead and King of the Underworld. He CAN'T bring the death to someone's life with his power but he can sense when someone is going to die.

TEN - APOLLO

The god of music, poetry, art, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge.

LUCAS - EROS

God of sexual desire, attraction, love and procreation.

BAEKHYUN - HEPHAESTUS

God of fire, metalworking, stone masonry, forges and the art of sculpture. Created weapons for the gods.

God of war. Represented the physical, violent and untamed aspect of war.

Thanatos, the greek word that stands for death also was the god of nonviolent deaths. In some myths, he’s considered to be a personified spirit of death rather than a god. SHINee Choi Minho x Reader Characters: Choi Minho, mentions of Kim Kibum (Key) and Lee Taemin Summary:  Minho wants to know why you’re crying and learns something else along the way. Word Count: 800+ Warnings: Angst, screaming, cursing, typos probably, etc.

“Give it back, Minho!” you screamed.

“Not until you tell me why you’re crying!” he screamed back.

“Ugh! I will kick you in the nuts if you don’t give it to me right now.”

“YA! WAE? I thought you hated this teddy bear because he looks ‘ugly like me’.”

You looked at your best friend in pure frustration, giving up after ten minutes of trying to pry the aged stuffed toy Minho gave you on your tenth birthday. 

You’ve had enough.

You crumbled on the floor, continuing your pathetic sobbing. You hid your face in the collar of your t-shirt and brought your knees up to your face.

At this point, Minho felt bad, well, worse, but his boiling anger—protective in nature—subsided at least.

“YAAaaaa… This teddy bear won’t fix your problem. I, on the other hand, can.” You ignore him and punch the innocent toy away when Minho brought it close to you.

“Ya…” Minho dragged out.

You snapped, “How can you fix my problem when you don’t even listen to me?! At least that bear did!”

“YA!”

“SEE! All you do is scream and argue!”

“That’s because you’re a moron!”

“AND YOU’RE A BASTARD! GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!” You begin throw whatever you got your hands on at him, and he wound up getting hit all the way out of your room.

You run to the door, lock him out, and roughly drop to the floor.

Moments later, you hear a much softer voice, “Yaaaa…”

You don’t hesitate, “GO AWAY, MINHO.”

He breathes in, “Just tell me what’s wrong… please?”

“…”

“…”

“…”

“… p l e a s e. I really want to help.”

You sigh , “… Kibum… broke up with me.”

You could practically hear his fist clench and his blood boil. He however did not say anything, and you were half thankful for that.

You continued, “I told him to die in a pit of toxic waste.”

Minho said something under his breath and then replied to you, “did you ask why he wanted to break up?”

“He told me,” you started feeling pathetic all over again, or I mean, more pathetic, “he thought I wouldn’t be like this, and that I was boring.”

“…”

“He also said that he had a new girlfriend now,”  you choked out, immediately hearing Minho scream on the other side of the door. “WAAAAAH! GAESEKKI-YA! I’m going to beat up that sonovabitch into a pulp when I see him tomorrow.”

You fumed, “YA!” At this point, you stood up and opened the door quickly, taking your best friend off guard for half a second. “THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT ANYWAY! You’re the one who kept saying I should go out with him even though I was so hesitant to!”

Minho let out a breath of disbelief, “You said he was cute!”

“Yes, but I say Taemin in cute too, doesn’t mean I want to date your dumb younger brother!” “Then why did you say yes when HE asked YOU out?” Minho raised his voice at two key words.

“BECAUSE! I knew you wanted me to! And I panicked!”

“WAAAAH! That makes sense, right? WAAAAHHHH! You agreed to date him because of me!” 

“Yes because you always exert your ideals on me! You always set me up with guys!”

“I do that because I want you to—“ “NO! You always push me aside to whomever I slightly notice because you don’t want me around you, looking all pathetic with your cool football player friends.”

“That’s the most ridiculous reasoning of the century!” he scoffed, “You’re my best friend. I don’t want to push you aside. I love you more than any dumb old jock on the football team.”

You clenched your jaw, breath hitching, “don’t say that.”

Minho knit his brows in concern to your bowed head, “Wha—” 

“That you love me.”

He tilted his head, “But it’s—” “BECAUSE YOU DON’T GET IT MINHO!”

You heaved in anger, frustration, and everything in between, “You don’t see. You don’t see me.

“Mwo?” he pulled his head out, “I see you pretty fine.”

Hot tears rushed don your cheeks and you roughly wiped them off. Minho looked absolutely lost. You spared him a glance and looked away, “I love you too…”

Minho knit his brows, why did that sound like a bad thing?

“… but I love you in a way you never will.”

Instantly, Minho’s expression dropped in realization, and you quickly recoiled before he could say anything. You sucking in a sharp breath and quickly ran hid yourself back inside the safety of your room.

You slammed the door on his face, and you instinctively knew his nose was hit on the way.

He called a curse word then your name, both in the same painfully manner. But you ignored him, his call, opting to reply instead, “Just… go away, Minho.”

Dear Taemin,

Maybe this is hard for you to believe, but I didn’t avoid your gaze every day because I wanted to. I didn’t think your eyes were a discomforting shade of brown. I didn’t think it was easy to ignore their starlight. It’s just— do you remember that first time we met by chance? That day, I caught my reflection in your eyes, and I’ve never been able to shake the thought that maybe starstruck expressions don’t suit my face.

Now that you’re going away, and I won’t be able to meet my starlight starstruck reflection in your eyes if I should gather the nerve to try, I wonder if I always expected this day to come. Or maybe I feared this day would come, and that’s why my words to you have been all too scarce, too few between the first stuttered “Hello” and today’s mumbled “Goodbye.” Maybe— no, definitely— I always knew you were the kind of breathtakingly beautiful flower petal that flutters nearby for a season before being swept away by the breeze.

Somebody told me that I would regret avoiding your gaze, and I knew they were right, but I— I blinked and looked away anyway. Somebody told me that I would regret every word left unsaid, but I— every time I try to speak to you, the words dry up in my mouth, and my heart aches, and I think it’s too late to catch my reflection in your eyes again. Somebody told me that I would regret every wordless moment, but I— I don’t know how to tell you that I saw you even though I didn’t dare stare straight into the sun. When I saw you for the last time today, I didn’t know how to tell you that I saw you, and I liked you, and I’m sorry that I led you to think otherwise (according to Minho, anyway).

I don’t have to know how to speak up to know that Minho is right— I do regret every word left unsaid. I regret them so much that I started to write them down as soon as I got home. Maybe (hopefully) they will find their way to you somehow. Maybe (hopefully) you will understand them. Maybe (hopefully) you will miss me as much as I will miss you.

Maybe (is it selfish to hope?) I will get a chance to meet my reflection in your eyes again.

[9:42 PM] Taemin stands at the door of the dance practice room and smiles as he sees you starting the choreography to his song MOVE.  He watches as the song was reaching near the end, but you slightly mess up and whine to yourself.

"Need some help?" Taemin smiles at you and finally makes you aware that he was watching. His smile gets wider when you sigh and nod and walks his way over to teach you.
